Anyways, since I would likely burn down my house if I take this on myself, we decided to hire professionals. Work will begin tomorrow morning.

This is what the space looks like with all the boxes and junk moved out. Wow!

Looking towards what will become the storage area. Furnace on the right side will also be replaced with a high efficiency unit. We are also having a humidifier and air filter installed with the furnace.

The room will have white trim. So this stained window will become white.

Flooring in the living space will be mahogany hardwood flooring. Man…they are expensive!!! For the storage room, we will use industrial grade carpeting.

Day 1

A crew of 3 came to my house and began work. Very quick and very efficient. Looking forward to what kind of progress is made in the next few days!

This is looking towards the storage room. Wall and sheet rock was put up. Door was installed as well. You can see the cables for the internet, telephone, and TV to the right of the white door that is standing on the floor. That’s my handy work, thank you very much. I left everything else to the professionals of course!

Back of the new wall. They will install insulation and then use sound deadening wall boards. All in an effort to avoid having to hear the furnace roar in the living space.

Day 2

The day mostly ended with the other side of the wall being completed and spackling. Went to the carpet store and bought some industrial strength carpeting for the storage room.

Day 3

More spackling. Molding around the door and was finished. Began boxing out HVAC duct work.

As with any renovation project, we ran into a big problem. Basically the HVAC tech abandoned the work after I questioned his work. He removed almost all the return ducts and decided to use the storage room as an open return room. The problem, IMHO, is that this ends up circulating the possible fumes emitting from the furnace. There’s just no return duct work to speak of. What you see in the photo below is the air filter attached to the furnace’s return opening. That’s it. Nothing more. A simple search suggested this is done entirely wrong. Oh well. Time to find another HVAC tech. At least I didn’t lose any money. This will delay the project a little bit. Already have 2 new techs coming in for estimates. I want this done correctly!

Day 4

Busy day today. The hard wood floors are installed as are the base board moldings. Sliding doors are in for the closet. More spackling as well. Thanks to the HVAC drama, I had to scramble to find a few new techs to get some estimates. Until then, the area where the HVAC duct work runs will remain open and unfinished.

Day 5

Well, it looks like the HVAC drama might end quickly. A new tech came over to check the work out and we decided to go with his company. Not too much damage. They are familiar with the brand we have, so that’s great. He told us we can go ahead and close out the boxed out duct work, so that’s great news since the rest of the renovation can move forward as planned!

A new ceiling fan was installed in the master bedroom and a shelf was installed by the bath tub in the master bathroom.

Most importantly, painting has begun!!!

Window was primed. It will be painted white tomorrow.

Closet is just about done. The doors and molding need to be painted white.

Really loving these mahogany hard wood floors. It was kind of expensive, but you truly get what you paid for!

New ceiling fan in the Master Bedroom.

New towel rack by the bathtub. It took me 2 hours to drill a hole 3/8″ deep into the porcelain tile, which was not nearly enough. The professional took 15 minutes to completely drill 4 holes. Yup. Right tool for the job = proper holes! LOL!

Day 6

Second coat of paint was completed. Molding and doors were painted. The room is finished!!!

Here’s what the storage rooms looks like. The track lighting was installed. The new HVAC tech is scheduled to come in on Monday and will complete the abandoned work on Tuesday. Carpeting will be installed next Saturday. Should look much better this time next week!
